If there’s one thing I would consider myself an expert in, it’s movies. I am the biggest movie buff and I can quote movies like my life depends on it. There are so many movies out there that inspire me to travel and explore the foreign lands that are depicted (real or fantasy).
For starters, any Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie will make a girl want to hit the road and meet a cute boy. My personal favorites are Passport To Paris, Holiday in the Sun and Our Lips Are Sealed. Let’s be real, anywhere MK & A went was a place we wanted to be.
When I’m in the mood to go to Paris, I know it’s because I’m watching Amélie or Moulin Rouge. Although you need English subtitles whilst watching Amélie, the storyline is touching and the Parisian scenery is even better. Moulin Rouge is a movie that I will never tire of. The movie, which is more of a cinematic experience, takes place in Montmartre in Paris. My next trip to Paris will definitely include a visit to the Moulin Rouge for a show.. do you think Christian and Satine will be there? A girl can hope!
The entire Harry Potter series makes me want to pack my wand and apparate to England. Luckily enough for me, I’ve done just that (sans wand) and went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour just outside of London. Two other films that give me a craving for the gloomy England weather are The Holiday and Love Actually. Part of The Holiday is set in the English countryside which makes you want to grab a cup of hot chocolate and sit by the fire… only if Jude Law is going to be there too, right? Love Actually takes place all around London Town and gives you that warm fuzzy feeling every time.
If you’re in the mood to go to Ireland, I suggest popping in P.S. I Love You. The film ventures to Ireland and the scenery could not be more picturesque.
Not too long ago when I was on a tour in Italy we watched Under The Tuscan Sun on our way from Orvieto to Tuscany.. how appropriate! The Tuscan landscapes in this movie are beyond ideal and make you want to sip on some vino. Another favorite that makes me want to explore Italy is The Lizzie McGuire movie. I’m not going to lie, when I was in Rome at the Trevi Fountain I expected to see Lizzie and Paolo running around.
If you’re feeling more than fabulous, head to the Middle East with Sex and The City 2. I highly doubt my first trip to the Middle East will go anything like the girls trip in this movie, so I will continue to press play on this one to get my fix.
And last but not least, some honorable mentions for travel inspiring films:
- Eat, Pray, Love
- The Secret of Roan Inish
- Roman Holiday
- Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
- Lord of the Rings series
